The Sumner Campus is home to the Short General Education Center and the Technology and Innovation Center. The campus is located at 2208 Davis-White Loop in Wellington, KS. The Short General Education Center offers general education classes, while the Sumner Campus Technology and Innovation Center offers programs of study in manufacturing, agricultural studies, computer science and information technology, and general educational development. We also offer General Education Transfer coursework and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) courses at Sumner Campus.

CTE Programs at Sumner Campus

Certificate & AAS

Prepares you for careers in crop and animal production and the processing, distribution, and marketing of various food stuffs. Careers focused on crop agriculture include work in crop consulting firms, or for seed and chemical suppliers and applicators. Careers focused on animal agriculture include herd management, feed sales, and genetic or nutrition consulting.

Certificate A

Provides student with initial introduction and preliminary training but does not prepare as entry level information technology worker. Emphasis on app development on Android, iOS, and ARcGIS platforms or as a web developer.

This certificate is primarily intended for students with personal interest (hobby) or for those exploring the area.

Certificate B

Prepares you for careers as an entry level information technology worker. Emphasis on app development on Android, iOS, and ARcGIS platforms or as a web developer. Completers will be prepared to obtain ArcGIS Desktop Entry certification and Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA): Web Applications certification.

AAS

Combines computer development, security, and basic hardware knowledge. Focus on current industry trends in information technology. Provides foundation for entry into workforce and preparation for further work in pursing certifications in Comptia, Oracle, Microsoft, and ESRI.

Certificate A

Prepares you for a career as an entry level worker in game development. Basic database skills including SQL.

TheGlobeAndMail.com states that starting salaries often fall somewhere around $35,000, but after successfully working on three or four projects – site quotes source saying it takes about two years – it can reach as high as $60,000. After five or six projects, the salary can reach $85,000.

Instructor Highlight – David Hays

David Hays has been a mathematics and computer science instructor at Cowley College since 2003. He is passionate about his work as he considers teaching his hobby. Hays, who received an Excellence Award from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development, said students are each unique in their own way and he learns much from them.
