|Cowley College PTK members attend Honors in Action Conference |
Phi Theta Kappa members of the Cowley College Alpha Gamma Upsilon chapter at the Arkansas City campus attended the Honors in Action Conference in Lincoln, Nebraska from November 1-3. Officers Priscilla Bianchini and Childress Rittle, member Dawson Leach, and faculty advisor Jennifer Rupp met with PTK members from all over the Kansas and Nebraska region to listen to motivational speakers, form connections with new people, and participate in service projects. read more
|Bianchini and Qualls named to All-Kansas Academic Team |
Cowley College sophomores Priscilla Bianchini and Jeannie Qualls were recently named to the All-Kansas Academic Team. A number of students applied for this honor this semester, and after a competitive application process and series of essays demonstrating their academic achievements, leadership and volunteerism, only two were selected from the Ark City campus. Bianchini and Qualls will be honored locally at the spring induction ceremony and will have their photographs displayed in Galle Johnson, replacing last year’s candidates. They will go on to represent Cowley College at a luncheon in Topeka in March honoring their accomplishments as well. read more

On Friday, September 20, Cowley College Phi Theta Kappa members of the Alpha Gamma Upsilon chapter in Arkansas City left for Kansas City, Kansas to attend the Kansas/Nebraska Leadership Conference. Kansas City Kansas Community College hosted the conference filled with useful information, activity, and fellowship. read more

Jeannie Qualls from Cowley College in Arkansas City, KS is one of 207 Phi Theta Kappa members named a 2019 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar and will receive a $1,000 scholarship. read more

This semester the Phi Theta Kappa Kansas-Nebraska Regional Convention was held in Wichita at the Hyatt Regency from March 1-3 with the following in attendance: officers Bri Hutto, Bethany Wolff, Chandra Alford, Symantha Shelton, and advisor, Deborah Layton. read more

Wanting to help Cowley College students that are struggling financially, the Phi Theta Kappa honors organization is currently working on their college project which is the creation of a pantry for students. read more
|Benefit dinner and Silent Auction raises over $1,500 |
Raising money to help with conference expenses, the Phi Theta Kappa Benefit Dinner and Silent Auction raised more than $1,500. The event was held Tuesday in Cowley College’s Earle N. Wright Community Room. read more

On Sunday, February 24, Alpha Gamma Upsilon, the Ark City chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, had its annual Induction Ceremony and All-Academic Team Celebration, officially welcoming 21 new members to the nationally recognized honors organization. The ceremony was conducted in the Earle N. Wright Community Room by officers Brianne Hutto, Bethany Wolff, Symantha Shelton, Emily Harris, Thais Gomes, Allison Wolfe, and Chandra Alford with advisors Deborah Layton and Scott Layton. read more

The members of the Phi Theta Kappa honors organization at Cowley College's main campus in Arkansas City have been busy trying to make a difference. Every year, Phi Theta Kappa does a project called Honors in Action. After the officers decided on the theme, they started their journey, focusing on improving recycling efforts on campus. read more

On Friday, November 2, four Phi Theta Kappa officers of the Alpha Gamma Upsilon chapter in Ark City left for Manhattan, Kansas, to attend the annual Honors in Action conference. The weekend was packed with a lot of useful information, activity and fellowship.
Officers Allison Wolfe, Emily Harris, Symantha Shelton and Thais Lindemayer Gomes with faculty advisor Deborah Layton had the opportunity to interact with chapter leaders throughout the Kansas and Nebraska region. read more

Returning from Phi Theta Kappa’s international convention, Catalyst, Cowley College’s Alpha Gamma Upsilon has a renewed energy for what all the honor society can do for them. This Catalyst held from April 18-21 was the 100-year celebration of the organization, and it was the #PartyoftheCentury. Five Cowley students, including the current officer team and one member, attended the convention in Kansas City, Missouri, with advisors Deborah and Scott Layton. read more

Alpha Gamma Upsilon's annual Benefit Dinner and Silent Auction took place in the Earle N. Wright Community Room on Thursday, April 5. The goal for the Ark City campus chapter of Phi Theta Kappa was to raise money for student registration and to cover travel expenses to leadership conferences. read more

On Thursday, February 15, two Cowley students, Edgar Fuentes and Kelsie Whitcomb, were honored in Topeka for their outstanding accomplishments at the 23rd Annual Kansas All-State Academic Team luncheon sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa and the Kansas Association of Community College Trustees. read more
|PTK conducts Honors in Action project |
Over the course of the 2017 fall semester, Phi Theta Kappa students at Cowley College’s main campus in Arkansas City worked on a Honors in Action project in order to maintain its 5 star level status. As part of the project they researched the topic of genetic manipulation. The Phi Theta Kappa students decided to distribute a survey poll across the Cowley College campus as a way to assess students’ familiarity with the topic of genetic manipulation and their feelings towards it. read more

Alpha Gamma Upsilon welcomes new members
On Sunday, April 23, Alpha Gamma Upsilon, the Arkansas City chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, had its annual Induction Ceremony and All-Academic Team Celebration, officially welcoming 16 of 90 new members to the nationally recognized honors organization and venerating this year’s academic team recipients. read more

Kyndal Dutton named Coca-Cola New Century Scholar
Cowley College sophomore Kyndal Dutton was recently named a Phi Theta Kappa Coca-Cola New Century Scholar and will have an opportunity to represent the state of Kansas at the annual Presidents Breakfast at the American Association of Community Colleges Convention held April 22-25 in New Orleans, LA. read more

Alpha Gamma Upsilon, Ark City campus's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, attended the Regional Convention in Wichita, Kansas from Friday, March 3 – 5. Chapter president, Ashley Huslig; Vice President of Leadership, Abigail Garcia; Vice President of Fellowship, Steven Lu; Vice President of Scholarship, Kyndal Dutton; Vice President of Communication, Deidra Shiever; members, Julien Cornejo and Shayna Templeton; and advisors Deborah and Scott Layton had a full weekend of activities. read more
Huslig, Dutton honored at PTK Honors Luncheon
Cowley students Ashley Huslig, Alpha Gamma Upsilon’s President, and Kyndal Dutton, Alpha Gamma Upsilon’s Vice President of Scholarship, were honored in Topeka February 16 during the Annual Phi Theta Kappa Honors Luncheon among representatives from 20 community colleges in the state. read more
PTK awareness campaign
Phi Theta Kappa members with Ark City's Chapter, Alpha Gamma Upsilon, sparked an awareness campaign on Wednesday and Thursday, December 6 and 7, by passing out Smarties candy to students in the Brown Center, Galle Johnson and the McAtee Dining Center. Because the fall enrollment period will be closing at the end of the month, officers wanted to encourage everyone who received an invitation to join. read more

Thursday, September 1, Alpha Gamma Upsilon, Phi Theta Kappa’s Ark City chapter, delivered a full truck load to Mulvane Care and Share to be distributed to victims of the recent flooding. read more

PTK members volunteer at Humane Society
Members of Cowley College’s Phi Theta Kappa organization recently completed Service Week by volunteering at the Cowley County Humane Society. Officers decided earlier this year that the group should do a service project, and after discussing different ideas, they wanted to contribute to the community’s need to assist animals. They picked the third week in April to be designated Service Week and encouraged members to help. read more
Phi Theta Kappa journeys to Washington D.C. for International Convention
Alpha Gamma Upsilon received the Top 100 Chapters award among 1,300 chapters internationally. Top 100 chapters are selected based on combined scores from that year’s Honors in Action and College Project write-ups. read more

The Alpha Gamma Upsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Cowley College was just recognized as a Top 100 Chapter, among nearly 1,300 chapters worldwide at the national convention in Washington, D.C.
Cowley PTK repeats as winners of Honors in Action research project
The Cowley College Phi Theta Kappa chapter, Alpha Gamma Upsilon, recently attended the Kansas- Nebraska Region Convention in Manhattan, KS, March 4-6.
For the second year in a row, Cowley College’s chapter finished in first place in the Honors in Action research projects about allowing guns on campus and in the College Project which attempted to determine the underlying causes of underperforming populations of students. read more
PTK students honored at awards luncheon
Top community college scholars from the state of Kansas, including four from Cowley College, were honored Thursday, February 11 in Topeka at the annual Phi Theta Kappa Honor’s Luncheon.
Representing Cowley were Samantha Twenhafel and Hannah Twenhafel from the Arkansas City campus, and Taylor Swarts and Tabitha Slater from the Mulvane Center. Each student went through a rigorous application process in order to be selected by the committee to represent Cowley College on the All-Kansas Academic Team. The students were judged on their academic achievement, leadership qualities and service work. Each is also a nominee for the 2016 All-USA Academic Team, sponsored by USA Today, Phi Theta Kappa and the American Association of Community Colleges. read more
PTK achieves Five Star status
Cowley College’s Alpha Gamma Upsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa recently received Five Star status for an eighth consecutive year.
In order to achieve Five Star status chapters must participate in district, regional and national conferences, campaign for new members and hold an induction. They also have to submit Honors in Action and College Projects, which require researching themed topics, completing action-based projects, working with administrators, students and community members and reporting on the outcomes and submitting awards to the national organization in writing.
In addition, chapters are required to meet twice monthly and to chronicle their chapter events.
Phi Theta Kappa Mulvane Students Raise $479 for Upcoming Conference
During the first and second week of February, Mulvane Phi Theta Kappa students raised money with a Valentine’s Day Bake Sale and accepted donations as they raised money to cut the cost of regional conference registration for members.
Over four total days, students raised a total of $479 to apply towards attending the Hallmark Awards Conference in Manhattan, KS March 4-6. In total, this money was able to cover the registration fees of three members who wanted to attend. The fundraising came at a time when new invitations for Phi Theta Kappa were extended to qualified students. read more
PTK students attend Honors in Action Convention in Topeka
Students in Cowley College’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society recently attended the Honors in Action Conference in Topeka, KS on November 6-8.
Officers Samantha Twenhafel, Hannah Twenhafel, Taylor Swarts, Arnoldo Ruiz, and Sam McClaflin along with member Aishah Alhomsi and advisor Tiffany Corley met with regional officers, coordinators, alumni and advisors from all over Kansas and attended general sessions as well as breakout and seminar groups led by those individuals. read more

Students in Cowley College’s Phi Theta Kappa organization recently attended a Leadership Conference and Hallmark Writing Workshop in Wichita at Newman University.
Officers Samantha Twenhafel, Hannah Twenhafel and Tabitha Slater, along with member Aishah Alhomsi and advisor Deborah Layton met the regional officers and the international organization president, Yanik Etan, while attending general sessions led by those individuals. read more
