Short General Education Center shining bright

August 21, 2020

Realizing that the signage at the Short General Education Center in Wellington was not easily visible from the highway, Marjorie Short recently donated funds for a new halo lit sign to be installed on the front of the facility.

“We knew the college did not need to spend dollars to provide this, so mom was happy to donate the money,” Marjorie’s daughter Nancy Burger said.

The signage (lettering) was installed by Conco Construction.

“The new signage for the Short Center is wonderful for the community and for our continued work with Cowley College.” Craig Nelson, president of Conco Construction said.

The Sumner Campus Short General Education Center began offering general education classes in the fall of 2019 and the new lettering on the building only enhances what was already a beautiful facility.

Dr. Kori Gregg, Cowley College vice president of institutional advancement, said the Cowley College Foundation is grateful for the continued support of the Short Family and their dedication to the educational future of Cowley College students.

“Their generosity, both past and present, will have a lasting impact on generations of students whose lives will be forever changed through the opportunity for a higher education,” Dr. Gregg said.

Marjorie Short, the wife of the late Bill Short, is the owner of Short Land Company, LLC, and the donor of the 18 acres of property in Wellington just east of Walmart along Highway 160 that Cowley College has turned into its Sumner Campus. In honor of the donation, the family received naming rights for the Short General Education Center.

The Short General Education Center features numerous classrooms, conference rooms, computer labs, office spaces, tutoring areas, space for adult education, an eatery with full catering capabilities, a bookstore, and a beautiful community room.

Prior to the opening of the Short General Education Center, Cowley opened its Sumner Campus Technology and Innovation Center in August 2018. The Sumner Campus Technology and Innovation Center offers programs of study in advanced manufacturing, agricultural studies, computer science and information technology, and general educational development.

Cowley College president Dr. Dennis C. Rittle said Ms. Marjorie Short continues to avail herself as a leader and investor of action.

“Thank you, Marjorie, for your continued generosity and for putting your words and passion into action by making the iconic Short General Education Center shine just a little bit brighter on the Sumner Campus with this new halo lit signage…Beautiful! It is community leaders like you who make my role a joy,” Dr. Rittle said.
