With the first day of spring semester classes slated to begin on January 13, Cowley College faculty and staff gathered in the Earle N. Wright Community Room for a back to school in-service meeting on Friday, January 11.
During the event, Cowley College president Dr. Dennis C. Rittle presented vice president of academic affairs Dr. Michelle Schoon with an award for serving the past 20 years as the College’s Accreditation Liaison Officer to the Higher Learning Commission. Dr. Schoon recently handed the duties over to Deborah Phelps, Cowley College’s executive director of institutional effectiveness.
“You have been fortunate to have Michelle in leadership for 20 years and today I am very thankful to be a part of the award which honors her for the generosity she has had not only with sharing that wisdom on your campus but on others,” Phelps said.
Dr. Schoon is happy to pass the baton onto Phelps after two decades as the Accreditation Liaison Officer.
“Accreditation is so important and Debbie will do it right,” Dr. Schoon said. “I want to thank all of you that have been involved in any sort of a strategic team at Cowley.”
Rikki Hettenbach, the Fall 2019 Tiger Heart Award recipient, then awarded Robin Graves, Humanities and Communication Department Secretary with the Spring 2020 Tiger Heart Award.
It was then Cowley athletic director Shane Larson’s turn to present assistant athletic trainer Blake Smith with a special award for his CPR/Life Saving techniques used recently inside W.S. Scott Auditorium.
Also, at in-service, Cowley College baseball coach Dave Burroughs, who plans to retire at the end of February after 32 years, 1,301 wins, and two JUCO World Series titles, received a standing ovation while being recognized for his accomplishments.
