Collegiate Quiz Bowl team places sixth at sectional tournament
Cowley College had two Collegiate Quiz Bowl teams take part in the NAQT (National Academic Quiz Tournament) Sectional held Saturday at Cloud County Community College. The tournament determined which teams qualified for nationals.
Cowley, which qualified for nationals in 2015 by placing first at the sectional tournament, and was invited to nationals each of the past two years thanks to its team qualifying scores, had its “A” team place sixth out of 12 teams. Cowley’s “B” team was short one player following the graduation of Samantha Myatt at the end of the first semester and two other individuals who were unable to attend, yet still managed to place 11th.
The Redlands “A” team, which placed first at the tournament, was pushed to the limit by Cowley’s “A” team before holding on for a 190-160 win in the fourth round.
“We challenged them enough to make them nervous,” Cowley College Collegiate Quiz Bowl coach Dianne Flickinger said. “It came down to the last question. If we would have won this round, it may have changed our end result.”
Flickinger is unsure if Cowley will get another invitation to this year’s national tournament even through the team is playing well and having fun in the process.
“Both teams are working well together,” Flickinger said. “Both teams did better at this event than any other during the year. Everyone continues to make improvements.”
The Cowley “A” team was made up of Aimee Schwintz, Matthew Sinnett, Kamdon Fuqua and Will Tapedo. The Cowley “B” team was comprised of Jacob Michaelis, Symantha Shelton, and Edgar Fuentes.
Everyone played eight rounds with 18-20 questions per 26 minute rounds.
Individually for Cowley, Aimee Schwintz came in seventh place, Jacob Michaelis finished 11th, Matthew Sinnett placed 12th, Edgar Fuentes finished 23rd, Will Tapedo placed 25th, Kamdon Fuqua placed 32nd, and Symantha Shelton finished 43rd out of 51 students.
“Jacob Michaelis, our math whiz, was our most improved player this tournament,” Flickinger said.
Johnson County’s Nathan Lucas was the top individual finisher at the tournament.
After the tournament the Cowley teams enjoyed dinner at Hu Hot in Wichita.
