Track standout named February Student of the Month
Known for her accomplishments on the track, Cowley College sophomore Taylor Williams is also getting recognition for her work in the classroom as the health and exercise science major was recently named the college’s February Student of the Month.
Taylor is the daughter of Trey and Danita Williams. She has an older sister, Toni Rich, and an older brother, Austin Welliver, as well as a younger sister, Marli Williams.
She graduated from Tecumseh (OK) High School in 2016. At Tecumseh, she was involved in track, cross country, basketball, FFA, the National Honor Society, and was the president of Student Council and Senior Class vice president. She finished in the top 5% academically in her graduating class.
At Cowley she is a three-time All-American member of the Lady Tiger track and field program. Along with track, she is a Student Ambassador, is a resident assistant, Cowley tutor, and is involved in Phi Theta Kappa and Mu Alpha Sigma Chi. She has been selected to the President’s and Dean’s Honor Rolls and has a grade point average of 3.87.
"We are very pleased with the work that Taylor does in her academics and also as an RA for us,” director of student housing Lynlea Bartlett said. "Her dorm manager always has great things to say about her. She is encouraging to others and is a model student.”
Williams came to Cowley on an athletic scholarship to compete as a member of the nationally ranked Lady Tiger track and field team.
"I chose Cowley because of the small town size and family feel,” Williams said.
Williams ran as part of the 4x800-meter relay that placed fifth at outdoor nationals and earned USTFCCCA All-American honors. She also ran as part of the distance medley relay team and 4x800-meter relay teams that placed second at indoor nationals and earned NJCAA All-American and Coaches All-American honors.
"I have definitely grown as an athlete and as a person,” Williams said. "I got lucky to have coach (Dan) Adler join the program the first semester I got here. He has improved the program a lot.”
Away from Cowley she volunteers at the Cowley County Humane Society and Arkansas City Chamber.
Williams is honored to be named the February Student of the Month.
"The students that usually get this honor do a lot for Cowley, so I am glad to be a part of that group,” Williams said.
After Cowley, Williams plans to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in heath and exercise science and eventually apply to a Physician’s Assistant program.
"I have long known that I want to go into the medical field and if it works out I would like to continue running,” Williams said. "Cowley has been great, there have been a lot of memories made.”
